Prof. Lorraine Maltby


Prof. Lorraine Maltby has been widely regarded as an exceptional leader throughout her illustrious career in the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences.

Aiming to solve some of the biggest challenges facing our planet, Lorraine’s research into freshwater ecosystems informs crucial environmental policy. Her expertise in environmental biology has led to several prestigious prizes, including the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry Environmental Education Award. She is also an esteemed member of the UNEP scienti_c expert group on chemicals and the environment.

Lorraine served as head of her department for four years, during which time she was a supportive role model for her female colleagues. Her work was instrumental in earning a silver Athena SWAN award for the department and the silver institutional award, both in recognition of outstanding e_orts towards gender equality. Lorraine’s colleagues said: “Lorraine is an outstanding example of a female leader. She has continually championed women in science.”
