Background and Objectives

Background:

The health of the older persons is part of family health components that has become an important public health issue as a consequence of ageing population. The inevitable increase in the share of older persons that results from the decline in fertility and improvement in survival that characterize the demographic transition is occurring throughout the world, with the older population of the developing regions is growing much faster than in the developed regions, including Malaysia. Malaysia is experiencing a wide variation in the rates of ageing by sex, ethnicity and geography and is expected to become an ageing nation by 2035, when 15 per cent (5.6 million) of the population are classified as senior citizens. The government has taken steps in its preparation to face the challenges and implications of an ageing nation including ensuring adequate health care services, provision of long-term care, financials as well as infrastructure that are senior-citizen friendly. However, there is still much to be done to ensure the health and welfare of the elderly community. This conference will provide an excellent platform for the researchers, institutions, stakeholders and policymakers from various countries and agencies to share experiences, research findings and recommendations for the betterment of the health of senior citizen.
