About

Youth are in many ways the major users of the digital media, and they embrace this new culture with great willingness. They are frequently described as a digital generation, a generation defined in and through its experience of digital computer technology. It is obvious that digital media is important for many young people. The emergence of this new digital culture however, holds both promise and peril for youth. The new digital media create tremendous opportunities for young people-- to connect with others around the world, to engage in meaningful play, to nurture skills for future careers, to contribute to a greater good, to encourage participatory cultures, to make education and learning more accessible, to promote civil engagement in society, to open up new opportunities for self-expression -- and many more. Despite the power of digital media that could be utilized as a beneficial potency in the lives of young people, the increase commercialization of the Web, the transfer of violent video games to the on-line media, cyberbullying, internet addiction, and more can create a toxic media environment that may pose significant harm to youth.

Researchers and policy makers have begun to recognise that the new digital media are a frontier that is rich with opportunities and risks, particularly for youth. In line with this finding, concerned individuals are beginning to ask questions, such as how is digital media being utilized by youth? How to minimize the risks that lie in the frontiers of digital media? Do the communication skills developed in online activities transfer to offline realms? Can civic life online predict a generation of behaviour? How can online networks inspire community participation? How can creative uses of digital technologies expand the boundaries of youth issues? Do protests in gaming communities, music file sharing, or fan petitioning of music companies constitute political behavior? Many more relevant questions need to be answered through empirical research and academic discussion. Therefore, this
Fourth International Conference on Youth (ICYOUTH) 2019 aims to provide a forum for the presenters and participants to exchange ideas, issues and trends related to youth and digital media in variety of context and discipline.
